Ernakulam Hockey
Ernakulam Hockey is the Recognized Body of Kerala Hockey, Hockey India, which is into the only motive of molding young players to grow in heights. Ernakulam was blessed to have the Dhronachaya of coaching Mr. Sreedhar Shenoy. Continuing with his blessings and the dedication from each one, Ernakulam has enabled many players to participate in different tournaments be it State, National and even International levels. While the history speaks about Hockey players from Ernakulam, this body is still trying to give the best players who would in the coming days or years allow the flag of Ernakulam fly high. We are providing the best grass root level training with the available infrastructure and are happy that a new Turf is allotted for Ernakulam, which will definitely build interest in the mind of youngsters.
Essential hockey skills
๐ Ball Control (Dribbling)
- Ability to move the ball smoothly while running.
- Types include straight dribble, Indian dribble, and V-pull.
- Focus: keeping the ball close to the stick and maintaining control under pressure.

- Used to move the ball quickly between teammates.
- Push pass (most common, for short distances)
- Hit (for long passes)
- Slap pass
- Scoop pass (lifting the ball over obstacles)
๐ฅ Hitting / Shooting
- Generating power and accuracy to score goals or clear the ball.
- Requires strong wrist and shoulder movement.
- Common techniques: forehand hit, reverse hit, and drag flick (used in penalty corners).
๐ง Positioning & Game Sense
- Knowing where to move depending on play situations.
- Understanding formations, marking opponents, and supporting teammates.
๐ Tackling / Defense Skills
- Key defensive moves:
- Block tackle (stopping the ball directly)
- Poke tackle (using stick reach to intercept)
- Jab tackle (quick poke and retreat)
- Involves reading the opponentโs movement and staying low in stance.

- Hockey requires quick bursts of speed and direction changes.
- Footwork drills, ladder exercises, and cone drills help improve agility.

- Strong core and leg muscles are essential.
- Fitness training (running, squats, planks) improves endurance and shooting power.

- Reflexes, diving saves, clearing the ball safely.
